- Description
- This chapter describes how the methods of Strategic Field Analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis were used to operationalise Bourdieu’s concept of field in a study of Australian boys’ education from 1996 to 2006. Events in this time and social space were mapped to show complex relationships between and within hierarchical layers or sub-fields of practice, research, policy and politics of boys’ education. Building vertically upon Bourdieu’s notions of dominant and subordinate positions within fields, this analysis allowed the intersections of positions and strategies of players and their texts to be laid bare for examination. The research moved beyond one cultural position towards a reflexive analysis of all positions in the field, investigating how issues arise, how discourses about them get transferred and how movements for change occur.
